Smooth service and clear savings in Kangasala

FOODDUCK® spread dispensers play a key role in smooth and ecological catering at schools and the city hospital in Kangasala.

Kangasala, a town with 32,000 inhabitants in the middle of Finland, was one of the first municipalities to introduce the hygienic and ecological FOODDUCK® spread dispensers. The cooperation between Foodduck and the municipality began already in 2016 when five schools started the ”duck experiment”.

Over the years, the ducks have gained great popularity in the schools. In Kangasala, they have been part of everyday life for a long time, and today the spread dispensers are used in several schools across the city. The device has proven its value in many different environments – operating just as smoothly in busy school cafeterias as in the city hospital. Thanks to its versatility, FOODDUCK® is suitable for a wide range of needs and facilities where hygiene, simplicity, and smooth daily operations are valued.

Utilising the latest technology at the city hospital meal distribution

In the spring of 2020, the first FOODDUCK® spread dispenser that was designed for hospital use was piloted at the Kangasala city hospital. The compact FOODDUCK® lille accompanies the serving trolley during breakfast, lunch, and dinner, dispensing spreads hygienically and environmentally responsibly to patients. The device simplifies meal distribution, improves hygiene, and provides benefits from many different perspectives. For example, single-portion packages are often difficult to open and generate both spread waste and unnecessary plastic waste.

“Here at the city hospital, FOODDUCK®has brought relief to hectic days. It is hygienic, there is no waste, and the portion size is always consistent. Thanks to its compact size, the FOODDUCK®spread dispenser is convenient for serving meals, and it is easy to clean and load,” explains service worker Riikka Lehto.

”Our long-term cooperation with the City of Kangasala formed the foundation for this project. The devices had been in use in schools for several years already, and we got a common idea that the dispenser could also be utilised in food services at the city hospital. We truly appreciate the open-minded attitude of the municipality of Kangasala and their willingness to join the experiment of an innovation in a hospital environment as well,” concludes Timo Sorsavirta, CEO of Foodduck.

Spread dispenser brings savings and reduces waste

The device has brought significant benefits to daily catering in Kangasala. Previously, the spread tubs and single-portion packages generated large amounts of plastic and aluminum waste. With the FOODDUCK® device, the amount of packaging waste has decreased considerably, and spreads can be used more efficiently with less waste. The empty spread pouches take up very little space and can easily be sorted directly into plastic recycling. Recycling has been made especially simple because the packaging contains no aluminum at all – unlike traditional spread tubs and portion packs.

Finnish product is attractive

In Kangasala, people appreciate that both the spread dispenser and the spread itself are Finnish-made. The margarine used in the FOODDUCK® spread dispenser carries the Heart Symbol label and complies with Finnish school meal recommendations. The domestic spread has become highly popular among customers – it is seen not only as a healthy choice but also as a responsible one. Local production and Finnish ingredients are often associated with locally produced food, strengthening the value of the choice from both environmental and national food production perspectives.

The Internet of Things brings new opportunities

FOODDUCK® dispensers utilize modern IoT technology, enabling features such as real-time monitoring of spread consumption, software updates, and portion size optimization through remote connections. The device collects usage data and learns to identify when more product is needed. At Foodduck, these advanced modern solutions are seen as an important part of making customers’ everyday lives easier.
