Pupils and kitchen staff join forces to reduce waste in Hankasalmi

The amount of plastic waste has been reduced with the help FOODDUCK® spread dispensers in the municipality of Hankasalmi in Central Finland. FOODDUCK® got both local pupils and kitchen personnel interested. Two schools in Hankasalmi are using FOODDUCK® spread dispensers. First, in April 2019, the canteen of the Kuuhankavesi school centre took FOODDUCK® into use, and the other school, Niemisjärvi, followed in November.

The Kuuhankavesi school canteen previously used margarine cases but the view was that the amount of plastic waste needed to go down. When using FOODDUCK®, they only produce one tenth of the waste created when using the traditional cases. In addition, no aluminium is used in the environmentally friendly FOODDUCK® packaging.

“We have very good experiences of FOODDUCK, which has made serving of school meals very smooth. Today’s young people are very conscious of environmental issues and can initiate this type of purchases. Our student association has considered that using the spread dispenser is a climate action,” says Lea Pakarinen, the local head of cleaning and nutritional services.
